Apple iPad 2 Launch

The Apple iPad 2 launch on sale at 5 p.m. Friday afternoon, and since there are no pre-orders, the only way to be the first on your block to have one is to go down to your local Apple retailer and get in line. But be prepared for a long wait, because some of the Apple faithful are already in line.

Have you ever camped out for days to buy tickets or get into an event? Neither have I, and I tend to think that people who do need a better hobby. But I know a lot of folks are into this stuff, so I'm sure there will be nice long lines outside Apple retailers this Friday when the iPad 2 launches at 5 p.m.

One of those people eagerly awaiting the chance to plunk down $500+ for a shiny new Apple tablet will be Justin Wagoner of Dallas, Texas - Apple fanboi extraordinaire. Justin has been first in line at his local store for several Apple launchings and has no intention of missing this one. Justin is already camped out in front of the Knox Street Apple Store in Dallas and will be documenting the wait at his new website iJustinOfficial.com. He will also be doing a live broadcast on iPad 2 launch day at Ustream. I checked the site today, and it's pretty boring. Unless a tornado hits that part of Dallas this week, I can't see him coming up with any juicy news stories.

OTOH, Apple seems to have timed this Apple iPad 2 launch perfectly to make the local news. Why on earth did they schedule this thing for a Friday afternoon rather than earlier in the day or over the weekend? The two Apple Stores and one Best Buy closest to me are all in malls where the traffic is impossibly congested during rush hour every Friday - even if nothing special is going on. Throw in even a few hundred Apple fans clogging the streets and fighting each other for parking places, and it's going to get ugly.
